Last month, Industrial Sonomechanics (ISM) had a chance to participate in the Pacifichem 2015 International Congress, where Dr. Alexey Peshkovsky gave a talk entitled "Continuous industrial-scale processing of liquids by high-amplitude ultrasound."

The congress, which took place in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, on December 15-20, 2015, was a very educational and enjoyable experience. A wide variety of topics related to chemistry and chemical engineering were covered by presenters from industrial, academic and government institutions worldwide, with close to 15,000 scientists and engineers attending. ISM's presentation was a part of the Technical Symposium on Applications of Ultrasound to Nanoscience in the Materials & Nanoscience topic group.

In the presentation, Alexey concentrated on:

  • High-amplitude ultrasonic processing as a potentially superior alternative to high-pressure homogenization and bead milling;
  • How scale-up limitations of conventional ultrasonic processors are overcome with ISM's Barbell HornĀ® Ultrasonic Technology (BHUT);
  • Illustrating how laboratory-to-industrial productivity scale-up factors can be determined for variety of processes (such as nano-emulsification, degassing, wet milling, cell disruption, etc.);
  • Showing successful implementation of BHUT for application such as the production of nanoemulsions, wet milling (nano-crystallization), cell disruption (cell lysis) and liquid degassing.
